The Fall Film Calendar Comes to LA
The big premieres may grab the headlines, but LA’s fall film season doesn’t end with the marquee festivals. Through early December, six independent film festivals bring a mix of emerging filmmakers, fresh perspectives, and genre-driven programming to screens across the city.
All six are part of the LA Film Festivals series, an independent-filmmaker hub since 2001 that pairs live screenings, networking events, and awards in an intimate theater setting. Several also require feature entries to be LA premieres, giving audiences a chance to catch films making their city debut.
Here’s what’s on the calendar:
Los Angeles Queer Film Festival, Sept. 24–27: Now in its 11th edition, it's a showcase for queer storytelling, with the LA-premiere requirement keeping the lineup fresh.
Los Angeles Women in Film Festival, Sept. 24–27: Running alongside the queer festival, the 13th edition champions female-identifying filmmakers and female-driven storytelling.
Los Angeles Horror Film Festival, Oct. 16–18: The 8th edition lands in the run-up to Halloween, giving genre fans a weekend of scares on the big screen.
Los Angeles Black Film Festival, Oct. 22–25: Now in its 13th edition, it spotlights both narrative and documentary features from Black filmmakers.
Los Angeles Indie Film Festival, Nov. 12–15: The 28th edition is a well-established stage for independent work.
Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival, Dec. 3–6: The 38th edition closes out the season with laughs.
The lineup reflects the breadth of LA’s film community, with opportunities to find new stories, support independent filmmakers, and experience the city’s creative scene in person.
